A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
