The scientist and activist, a bioastronautics research scientist, was aboard the automated spacecraft in April 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised leaders in different industries.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
