An individual made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the odds had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other platform users also made significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill presented on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
